Explore The Great Siege Tunnels
The Great Siege Tunnels, Gibraltar
The Great Siege Tunnels in Gibraltar are among the most impressive examples of 18th-century military engineering, carved directly into the Rock of Gibraltar during the Great Siege of 1779 to 1783.
This siege took place during the American War of Independence, when Spain and France joined forces in an attempt to reclaim Gibraltar from Britain. Despite being heavily outnumbered and under continuous attack, the British defenders showed remarkable determination and creativity for victory.
A Fortress Within a Fortress
In 1782, Sergeant-Major Henry Ince of the Royal Engineers proposed a daring plan to dig tunnels into the northern face of the Rock so that cannons could be positioned to fire on the Spanish lines below. Using only hand tools, black powder, and great effort, soldiers managed to excavate several hundred feet of tunnels within months, creating gun ports and chambers that transformed the cliffs into powerful defensive positions.
Today, a visit to the Great Siege Tunnels offers an extraordinary opportunity to experience the ingenuity and endurance that defined Gibraltar’s defense. The tunnels form what is often described as a fortress within a fortress, complete with cannon placements, lookout positions, and quarters hewn from solid limestone.
Historical Displays & Stunning Views
